In the most exciting news of 2014, acclaimed golf architect Tom Doak contacted me about painting the cover art for his highly anticipated re release of The Confidential Guide. Pictured above is the first of 5 volumes. The cover of this volume is St. Enodoc hole 6 as seen in a photo Tom took in the Eighties.

To introduce this project I borrow from an interview He did about this great book.

"The original book was printed and given to 40 friends as a Christmas gift in 1988. There were 20 more in 1989 … Norman has a copy of that second printing, I believe. It was written as a thank-you to people for helping me to get around and see all these courses, so they wouldn’t need to call me and ask which courses they should see in England or Scotland. Since it was strictly for friends, there was zero self-censorship of reviews.

George Peper, the editor of GOLF Magazine , was one of the first recipients, and he wrote about the book in his column in the September, 1989 issue. After that, I started getting requests for it … and notes from people who had “seen pages” or had pirate copies! There were some inquires from publishers, which led to my second book, The Anatomy of a Golf Course. But I still wasn’t sure I wanted to publish The Confidential Guide for a general audience. It was too personal, and I knew it would be controversial.

I changed my mind in 1994. Business was slow — I paid my associates more that year than I paid myself — and I knew the book had value. Also, a couple of friends [including Ron Whitten] convinced me that most of the people who would be offended by the book were ALREADY offended, so I had nothing to lose and a lot to gain by putting it out there — having seen all those courses was really my main credential for being a golf course architect. So, I decided to print 1000 books and sell them myself. I actually sold about 700 of them by word of mouth, without the benefit of the internet.

My friend Brian Lewis, who helped get the limited-edition book printed for me, convinced me to do the color version for Sleeping Bear Press a couple of years later. The attraction of that edition was being able to share all my photographs. There were 12,000 copies in that run, and it’s been out of print ever since.

I should note that the new edition is entirely new. The last version of the book was stored on old floppy disks, which my computer can’t read, so I had to retype the whole book, and I’ve rewritten most of it in the process" -Tom Doak

This wasn't the first time Tom has given me the chance to help in one of his fine efforts. Tom owns an original of Pacific Dunes hole 9 and its upper green. He has also asked me to work on a couple of original commissions as gifts and one project to go unnamed for now.

The most amazing part of this already amazing gesture was that Tom never offered any "in process" constructive critique of the painting other than "It looks terrific! Good call on the white dog, that makes him a focal point, as he should be. I can't tell you what if anything more needs doing, it looks great to me."

He shows real trust in telling me my painting will be on the cover before he has even seen the painting. It is a pressure situation for me knowing how opinionated and discerning he is, but all I can do is go with my gut, give it my very best effort with everything I have ever learned about oil painting and try and create something unique and memorable. Even after hearing his initial feedback in quotes above, I wasn't about to jinx myself and make public the exciting job I had gotten until the book went to press. Which it now has. Hope you can look it up, it will be a valuable tool and a great, fun read. Just like version 1, it has already generated some controversial buzz with some low course grades.

Enjoyed a nice fourth of July at Lake Tahoe with my wife and baby girl Sophie. So many amazing memories made with the girls!! Was able to sneak away during a couple of naps and get some plein air painting in. Here is a quick painting I worked on...on the shores of north Lake Tahoe, just east of Tahoe City.

In a lot of ways I find Plein Air painting to be like golf for me. Every time out is equally enjoyable and humbling. A great hobby where I spend time appreciating the beauty of nature and the challenge of getting the most out of myself with my art in a very short period of time. This was only the third small outdoor paiting I have done since last fall and I am hoping the rust begins to really come off soon. Hope you enjoy it.

PS. Everytime I am in Tahoe I am scratching my head wondering why I haven't gotten out to see Clear Creek, the Coore and Crenshaw course down the road towards Carson City. Got to make that happen.

Good Morning. In this post you will find pictured above a cell phone quality photo of the paiting as it looks now. Down below is the earlier version, which just didn't quite excite me enough to call it finished. I decided to get a little more sand scrub in view in the foreground, along with two or three other minor tweeks. Can you see them? I hope you enjoy my painting.

US Opens always draw excitement for me, but this one is different. The news that Pinehurst #2 was going to be restored by Coore and Crenshwaw was such a great surprise a few years back. The Pinehurst brain trust has made a monumental decision and they will not regret this. The course looks like a throw back, has torn edged bunkers, sandy waste areas abound, burnt out turf at the margins and unclean lines. It pulls people 180 degrees from the "green and manicured" that has plagued much of US Golf and #2 for the last few decades.

It has been a pleasure to know Bill Coore personally for the last 7 or 8 years. He is my idol and owns an original painting of mine. His legend was planted at Sand Hills in 1993 for most of us and each course he and Ben Crenshaw took on after that has come on scene looking as if it had existed for a century or more. I had the pleasure of meeting Ben at the Streamsong grand opening and we met while standing in front of two of my original paintings. I surely couldn't have wished for a better scenario. A month or so later Ben had written me a letter endorsing my work.
Here is my most recent oil painting of the restoration of the ninth at Pinehurst #2. It is 24x36 and looking for a good home. It is only the 3rd painting I have done not as a commissioned painting in the last 2-3 years. The new look excited me to another level and I knew I wanted to see if I could creates something worthy.

"For several years I have admired your work and considered you to be among the elite golf course artists in the world. Having seen several of your most recent paintings, I could make the argument that you are the best in the profession. Your technique and style bring to canvas the life, vibrancy and realism of the landscapes you paint. I also appreciate that your work presents golf hole from the golfer's perspective. The holes you paint are actually recognizable to a golfer fortunate enough to have played them! I was very please to see Ron Whitten's recent article on you in GOLF WORLD and am happy to see your talent being recognized by the golfing community." -Bill Coore

"We are great admirers of your work. Your paintings are beautiful and I must say that they appeal to Bill and me from that aspect that there is a good deal of impressionism painted so admirably by you." -Ben Crenshaw

Enjoy the US Open.
I am excited for the two U.S. Opens at the classic course in June and hope to make it there. Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw have done a remarkable job in recreating the golf course and taking is back more to the look original envisioned by Donald Ross. Here's my take on the short par 3 ninth.
This will always be a special place in my heart. It was the sight of my first real job, and job in golf. I caddied at Waverley CC for a couple of years and worked in the bag room. It was during this period that the 93' Junior Amateur was held and Tiger Woods defended for the second year in a row and won a Record three USGA Junior Amateur titles. I was among the small crowd that final round and watched as Ryan Armour birdied 15 to go 2 up with three holes remaining. Well, they halved 16 and then Tiger did the unthinkable and made birdie from very difficult sand shot up and downs on the closing 2 par 5's in order to force a play off. He won on the with a par on the first playoff hole, hole 1.
This oil painting is the view across the river I would see every time I was dropped off at work. The course has always shined, but never as bright as it has after Gil Hanse and his crew made some modifications just over a year ago. The current course looks like it has been there forever in all the right ways and blends very well with the history and pedigree of the Club.
I was happy to be asked by the GM to create an oil painting of a place that meant a lot to me personally.
Best,

One of which is a place I have yet to visit... St. Andrews... but I drew all the passion I have for the place and tried to put it into this original oil painting and create a timeless piece. Interestingly I sold both of my "break from commission" paintings fairly rapidly.

This is an oil painting I created for my friend and Golf Architect/Shaper talent, Kyle Franz. He provided me with some $$, a couple of old black and whites of this hole from early 1900's and described what he wanted to see the hole returned to. I sure hope he gets his way !!

The painting got me excited to see the work done on #2 and to hopefully oil paint it as well. It is a golf trip that I have yet to take, which could be well timed in the next couple of years based on the improvements in the area.
Comments welcome.
Best,
Josh
PS. Kyle has a nice interview posted on Golf Club Atlas hosted by Ran Morrissett, who is obviously a big fan. Tom Doak, golf's most accomplished architect commissioned two Streamsong oil paintings as a gift to the Mosaic company. A year ago, he flew me out to play the juvenile version of the course with him. This was a great moment, as we had never golfed together and I hit shots while taking photos trying to figure out great painting angles, of which there were many.
Fast forward a year to last weekend. The weekend was filled with amazing weather, two fantastic courses debuted and great personalities coming together. This presentation happened at the grand opening and it was fantastic as I finally got to meet Ben Crenshaw.
He was pretty excited about seeing my painting of his course. He and Bill Coore couldn't have been more complimentary, but of course you would expect nothing less from these two gentlemen. Tom completely caught the ownership off guard with this generous gift. Thanks to Masa Nishijima for the best photo on the subject.
Being among these three gentleman and talents is a moment I will never forget. Cheers to a great 2013 and a huge year in my life with the birth of our first Daughter expected within the month!!!!Joshua CF Smithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13526385685430232188noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4226135544699796483.post-1880867288373135302012-10-30T14:37:00.001-07:002012-10-30T14:37:58.379-07:00New PaintingsHere are some new pieces I thought you would enjoy.
I remember a few years ago thinking that I would always be a studio oil painter. Hearing experts say that the best way to evolve your oil paintings for the better is to paint Plein Air. I believed them, but had no plans to start. Upon further review... I have started and it has to be one of the best hobbies ever. A cool wooden box and tripod. Surveying the potential landscapes and the decisiveness you must have to narrow it to one particular scene in the landscape and then figure out how you will crop it. The quick layout of that crop. The serenity of being alone in nature. The rapid pace that you work at in order to take in all that the scene offers before the lighting changes. Deciding when you are finished. And leaving with a great souvenir that will last forever and be a great start/sample if you choose to paint something larger of the same scene. How many millions of color combinations exist in Nature? I hope to narrow that down month by month over the years and find new colors to put up on canvas. Here are Plein Airs number 9 and 10.

The photo above depicts the par three 5th hole, a mid-length one shotter with plenty going on. It will leave an indelible mark on your golfing memory bank after you see it. Left is an absolute no-no as it drops 30 feet down towards the previous hole. To me it does the best job of linking Streamsong to its ancient golfing roots. Namely, the staggered layout of the small bunkers with their peaked and tattered edges, the low profile "non framed" backdrop and the ultra random shape and undulation that the long slender green follows.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj84JUnADwEuepUdBwL38wipj6Q6wKC7Gi9XsxJsPjblxHlSqsx87n6T2ucMjHQSML6-vk9cHBHlqncLrbBBaV_9Kq4lst68URyIoNBCRLqNLahqCufrYptugl1JWHr2WwD9NwVWOU6XJoy/s400/IMG_2038.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5731237639211150482" />
Here you see Tom walking the breadth of the 5th green again in afternoon light to show where all the unique pin locations are and their respective elevations. I had the good fortune of previewing the course on his invite, he flew me out from California in order to scout out Oil Paining possibilities for him, of which there are many. It was a dream of mine to play golf with Tom at some point and I am so thrilled that it happened in this forum. Wind will surely be a factor on this hole and with the depth of the green calling for a possible 4 club alteration in the absence of wind, one can only imagine the fun that will ensue. It may be a great hole to try to hit putter off the tee and take the wind completely out. ;) This photo may end up an oil painting coming soon. Oh yeah, this resort will open in 2012 and will also feature the Red course, a Coore and Crenshaw 18 holes interwoven with the Blue.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 286px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj17hnVLhpKTMfLl_y1RSKHQIkACQK8QCa5kPkJlBBigh9WEq581jVjD4OD2oLGnH0ekNrLFPABzpDQkRFCXOKNyGZ1GgvdQnSlWs_yzEKn-YVbX7hhbL9tOdA-29QIZuKH_lI2I_WZfccv/s400/Streamstrong-1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5731245179365746562" />
Joshua CF Smithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13526385685430232188noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4226135544699796483.post-20427515331576223092012-03-23T20:01:00.008-07:002012-03-24T08:19:00.125-07:00The Prairie Club...renderings for Tom LehmanIf you are sitting in KFC having lunch and your phone lets you know you have a new voice mail, by all means check it. He was one of the qualified architects who was up for the job before it was awarded to Kyle Phillips.

Tom saw a few of my paintings later that day and asked me to come back and chat about them. He then asked me if I had ever painted a course that didn't exist yet...the rest is history. I flew to meet Tom in Valentine, Nebraska twice to drive around the virgin sand hills property. Below is a rendering I did of what Tom and Chris Brands figured the first hole should look like. At the bottom of the page you will find the finished product from a slightly different angle. After having a Rock Creek Cattle Company trip postponed last year as well as a Cabot Links visit pushed into the future, it was great to get the wheels up and research some upcoming oil paintings at this "Instant Classic". The Red course is built by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw and the Blue course is built by Tom Doak. This resort will WOW any golf lovers who find it. The courses are slated to open late this year and are open to the public. To have 36 built on amazing sand dunes and representing some of the best work of Doak and Coore Crenshaw is truly "Bandon Like". The terrain is like a combination Sand Hills of Nebraska and Lost Dunes of Tasmania, Aus, with some large lakes scattered around the property.
My trip was sponsored by Tom Doak with the thought of doing a couple of oil paintings. Now, enough about that...

Every year Tom Doak hosts an invitational tournament for friends and colleagues at a course that he has designed or improved. The point is to unveil some new work and glean feedback from those in attendance. You partner up with one person and play fourball scratch 9 hole matches. Previous winners have included Ben Crenshaw, Mike Keiser, Fred Muller to name a few. It isn't the easiest invite to procure...and it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that I had hopes of someday getting the chance to play. To my surprise, a timely email to Tom on another subject unfolded into an invitation to play in my first Renaissance Cup hosted at Old Macdonald at Bandon Dunes. It was really a great time, we even upset the "ringer" team and won our first match. What a fun course to play Match Play on !!! Got a chance to meet a few other like minded ladies and fellows and as a bonus spent a beautiful morning walking around the new Conservation Course at Bandon. It is a quaint little, 13 hole par three course that Coore and Crenshaw draped over "linksy" dunes overlooking the Pacific. I cannot wait to return to play it and paint it, along with Old Macdonald.
Joshua CF Smithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13526385685430232188noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4226135544699796483.post-65429694234068610982011-09-09T18:04:00.000-07:002011-09-09T18:27:09.902-07:00A Painting of Tenth at Bel Air Country Club

The Tenth at Bel Air C.C. nearly finished. Been busy the last couple of months working on this Oil of Bel Air C.C. This is a painting for the current back to back club champion. It is a view from up on a the balcony above the dining room. I've always enjoyed capturing architecture assuming it really adds to the texture and beauty of the scene. Many golf lovers are drawn to historic structures such as this famous bridge at Bel Air. Other iconic structures that we love, of course are, The Windmill at NGLA, the halfway house at Pine Valley, The Clubhouse at Cypress Point, Royal and Ancient at St. Andrews, The Clubhouse at Shinnecock Hills, and so on. Hopefully I will continue to have the opportunity to paint all of these. They are almost logos in their natural state.

Happy Friday,

JoshJoshua CF Smithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13526385685430232188noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4226135544699796483.post-65937418857489832482011-07-05T20:39:00.000-07:002011-07-05T20:56:17.774-07:00Ben Cox Fundraising Effort

Wanted to point your attention to one of the greatest rags to riches fundraising efforts in recent history. Jim Colton, a golf lover who often takes caddies while playing Ballyneal Golf Club, was touched when he heard of a skiing/snowboarding accident to one of the regular caddies. Ben Cox was partially paralyzed and his life was changed forever. Jim thought he could raise a couple thousand dollars through his golfing mates by staging a Golf A Thon at Ballyneal in order to help out Ben and his family with medical bills. The word spread very quickly and donations have come from all over the golfing community. To date over $100,000 has been raise for Ben's medical care. What a great "Man For Others" Jim Colton is.
Jim played 155 holes in one day, all walking with a caddy. Over 45 miles of golf at Ballyneal Sun up to Sun down. Glad we could help with a donation prize, a threesome at Cal Club. A diamond shaped Original oil painting. USGA official and friend of mine commissioned this perspective from the California Golf Club, "Cal Club". Visible are holes 3, 4 and 8. The Red Colored background is not part of the oil painting, but rather filler created by photoshop.

The owner had a hunch this would make a great painting and perspective and had the perfect spot in his home to display it.

Alister MacKenzie rebunkered the Cal Club along with Robert Hunter in 1927. Interestingly, if you were to walk about 4 or 5 miles directly forward and over the hill in the backdrop of the painting you would end up at Sharp Park Golf Course. An original Alister MacKenzie "golden age" seaside layout.

This was a really interesting project for me and I'm looking forward to the next one...Bel Air Country Club.

Cheers,

Josh CF SmithJoshua CF Smithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13526385685430232188noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4226135544699796483.post-50420473486415605312011-02-28T12:09:00.000-08:002011-02-28T12:09:28.061-08:00Nice piece about Josh in Golf World

Ron Whitten wrote a cool piece about Josh in this week's Golf World Magazine. The architects, Bill Coore/Ben Crenshaw and the club have done such an amazing job of turning back the clock there. From the moment you drive on site, you are overwhelmed with a timeless, throw back feel. While it was only built a few years ago, you would swear it is 100 years old. From the style of clubhouse, heirloom grassing choices, course hardware, down to the everyday maintenance, it screams Old and Wise. I left with great memories, a memory card full of photos, an OS baseball cap and probably the best yardage book ever created. While I don't have a photo of their book here, I do have photos of my first attempt at a Yardage Book.

Their yardage book was drawn by Bill Coore and features loose sketches of each hole tee to green. Each line was sketched with care as if he had designed the course... ;) ;) ;) When asked by the California Golf Club to create a yardage book of my own, my mind raced to the OS book. I asked myself how can I create something with such feel without ripping off the style completely. After sketching for a while with pencil, it became clear to me I needed to "dance with the date I brung" and oil paint the book. It would be completely original and give me a better chance to attain something special. My hope was to paint it in color and have the book produced in black and white. The Board of Directors overruled and wanted the book printed in color. Hope to be lucky enough to do another Yardage Book some day, in between Original Oil Paintings.

Cheers,

Josh SmithJoshua CF Smithhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13526385685430232188noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4226135544699796483.post-44968494048923791732010-11-18T06:18:00.000-08:002010-11-18T06:18:44.232-08:00Great piece in NCGA Magazine

You can read it here on pages 58 and 59
